Water Related Education

Are you interested in learning about water in North Texas. We offer classes on various subjects including:

  • State of Water in North Texas ... Learn all about where our water, in Collin County, comes from? What impacts there are on that water from the drought, farming, Zebra mussels, and more? Who/what makes up the North Texas Municipal Water District? What watersheds and lakes feed our water systems? What can you do to aid in water conservation in the region? And much more.
  • Rainwater Harvesting ... What is Rainwater Harvesting? Why should we harvest rainwater? What is the difference between rural, urban and city areas affect on our water? What is stormwater vs regular water?
  • Making a Rain Barrel ... Why make a rain barrel? What resources do you need to make a rain barrel? Beyond just a barrel, how else can water be stored? This class is usually run in conjunction with the Rainwater Harvesting class.
  • Drip Irrigation and Spray to Drip Conversion ... What is drip irrigation? What is the difference between drip and other types of irrigation? What are the benefits of converting from spray systems to drip irrigation systems?
  • Irrigation Efficiency ... What is an Irrigation Audit? Who can perform that? What things can homeowners do themselves to increase the efficiency of their own sprinkler system? How are some simple repairs performed? What is the difference between spray, stream, rotator and other types of systems?

If you have a group that would be interested in one or more of these topics you can contact the Collin County Master Gardeners and they will arrange for you to talk with a member of the Water Conservation committee. All classes are free except Making a Rain Barrel ... that class has a $50 charge to cover the cost of the rain barrel that you will make and take home.
